Mosque and Community Centre in Barton Hill
There is currently an application submitted to Bristol City Council for a ‘change of use’ to a disused warehouse on Aiken Street in Barton Hill. The plan proposes to turn this building into a mosque and community centre.
Statement from Bristol City Council Planning Department – 5 May 2010
The planning department has reached the view that the change of use from
factory/warehouse to community centre and mosque is acceptable in
principle land use terms subject to a detailed assessment of potential
impacts.
In this regard the applicant (Tawfiq Mosque) and their agent (Grangewood
Consultants) are preparing additional supporting information and
clarification on the highway implications of the development and also on the
potential noise concerns.
The planning department expect this material to be submitted in about
three weeks time (by 26 May).
The department will then undertake a 14 day re-consultation exercise (end
of May / beginning of June) with all those who have already submitted
comments to the planning department (that have not been disregarded for
racial content).
The planning department envisage taking the planning application to Central
Area Planning Committee in July. The Central Area Planning Committee is
made up of elected ward Councillors. The meeting will be a public forum
that anyone can attend. To make a statement at this meeting it must be
submitted in advance. The Committee will then make a decision on the
planning application with the assistance of the planning officers report and
verbal presentation. The planning system allows for conditions to be
attached to planning permissions which can, amongst other things, control
hours of use of premises and the amplification of sound both in and outside
the premises.
